If you are visiting Barcelona for more than a few days, you absolutely can’t miss a day trip to Montserrat Monastery. This stunning mountain destination is bound to blow your mind with its charm, rich culture, history, monastery and stunning landscapes. I am just so exciting to write this blog, as Montserrat is truly a hidden gem that offers so much to every traveler. Let’s dive into all the essential information you need to plan your perfect trip.
Best Time to Visit
We visited Montserrat in June, and it was quite hot that day. Spring and early autumn are ideal for visiting, offering mild weather and fewer crowds. However, Montserrat is a year-round destination with each season providing its own unique charm. You can easily spend an entire day or 6+ hours are enough for exploring Montserrat.

Getting There
Montserrat can be visited conveniently from Barcelona. You can easily reach it by bus, car or train from Plaça d’Espanya – R5 line, followed by a cable car or a funicular ride up the mountain. My advice is to avoid booking a day trip through agencies, as they can be expensive and you might also end up time bound. Instead, purchase round-trip tickets at the station, which include the cable car (buy your Montserrat ticket to “Aeri de Montserrat”). The journey takes about an hour to an hour and a half.
It is highly recommended to go by train because the journey towards the Montserrat offers great mountain views.
Make the most out of your visit!
Exploring the Monastery
Situated on the Montserrat mountain, the monastery offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The mountain’s unique rock formations add to the dramatic setting. The monastery was founded in the 11th century and has been a significant religious and cultural site ever since. The basilica of Montserrat is known for its stunning Gothic and Renaissance architecture, with elaborate interior decorations and beautiful chapels.
It is a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts, with numerous trails leading to various peaks and viewpoints. We went there with our elders, unfortunately, they were tired from hiking, and we were unable to fully explore the monastery’s architecture and beauty. However, I am sure it is worth a visit.
Go For A Hike
There are few hiking trails such as Camí de les Bateries (around 3-4 hours), Montserrat Monastery to Sant Joan (about 2-3 hours), Santa Cova Path, Sant Jeroni Trail (about 1-2 hours). These hikes range from 2 to 5 hours round trip, offering diverse experiences and scenic views.
